The first portion of this project was to create a hero image and thumbnail for the release of the Summer Journey.
This was a fairly straightforward ask, but there was some nuance in the execution. I needed to be mindful of the visibility of the avatar icons, and any distractions that design elements could cause. This needed to be a simple piece, which sometimes means stripping things back and not being afraid to show constraint.
What I ended up with here was a simple House Green background. The avatar icons link with each other and are framed by the Odyssey brand tan color.
This is another asset that looks simple on the surface, but again, had some nuance. Each sticker sheet has a theme. There are the Avatars, the Journeys, and the Core.
For each of these, I had to consider the margins and bleed, specifically in regard to the frames around the circles that will be peeled out.
For the avatars, I framed them with scaled-up versions of themselves. You’ll only peel off a portion of that border for the sticker, but that background image adds the needed margin and added visual interest. For Journey, 5 of the Journey stamps were used, and I added borders for bleed and depth. The Core sheet was the most interesting and fun to explore because I got to play around with placing elements. I also created the coffee branch illustration for one of them. I found it satisfying to be able to create something new, but that still carried the spirit of the Odyssey aesthetic.
This piece was the most challenging, and the most enjoyable. I was tasked with creating “Avatar Cards” for the Summer Journey. The goal was to create cards, similar to the look and feel of a Pokemon card so that when the Journey viewer clicked or tapped on one of the Avatars, this informational card would pop up.
These are meant to be both informational and engaging. Something new and fun to stop the viewer and encourage them to take a look, and to read the information provided.
The Komodo was added to this asset because the Komodo Avatar was the reward for completing this Journey. Upon completing the Journey, the user unlocked the Avatar as well as this informational card.
All in all, the Odyssey project has been some of my favorite work to be a part of. I’m currently working on 2 more Odyssey work streams and I’m super excited to share those with the world in the near future!
